TEATRO VERDI DI TRIESTE – ROBERTO DEVEREUX (8th May 2008)

Nelly Miricioiu was very moving in the role of Elizabetta……..from the very beginning it was beyond doubt that her artistic interpretation in the role was out of the ordinary and  included  an excellent technique. “La Miricioiu” a suggestive actress who carries the specific qualities that are identifiable with a dramatic soprano with agilities, exactly what is needed in this role,  and for  which Donizetti wrote a very difficult score for the voice.

Il Gazzettino – A Moving Elizabetta – A Great Nelly Miricioiu – 10th 2008 – Dejan Bozovic

(Translation from Italian )

*******************************************************************************

………..the Elizabetta of Miricioiu was very well liked. The not so young singer has a technique that allows her to leave everyone behind overtaking the most experienced with her presence onstage. She measures her breathing and volume control as only a bel cantist knows how. In the last aria “quell cangue versa to” she can sing dramatic together with a virtuosity without economising the energy but with great precision of phrasing that resulted in a deserved acclamation from the public.

Vita NuovaArti e Spettacoli – 16th May 2008  - Marzio Serbo

(Translation from Italian )

Nelly Miricioiu brought in the depth of all her knowledge in the preparation of this role….….praised also in London she sang the role with abandonment and a vivid polish in this tormented bel canto score with a presentation which grew to an exciting crescendo as she reached the dramatic sequence of “Vivi ingrato” coming to a burning conclusion with this aria, and always even in the role which was presented with dignity, incisiveness and vision.

Messaggero Veneto – Nelly Miricioiu – 10th May 2008 - Danilo Soli

(Translation from Italian )

For this type of opera  strictly connected to a certain epoch, uniquely of the bel canto style, it is impossible to perform without a triumphant voice. This was found by the public in the performance of Nelly Miricioiu. The Romanian soprano showed charisma, an imperious presence which was admirable in the way she paced herself through the vocal score which she did with a compelling style.

Il Piccolo  - Claudio Gherbitz – 10th May 2008

COG at QUEEN ELLIZABETH HALL LONDON - MACBETH

"In the dominant role of Lady Macbeth , Romanian soprano Nelly Miricioiu was not going to allow a concert performance to impede some full-blooded acting as she wandered through the violins in sequined chiffon, reading Macbeth’s letter.  Verdi envisaged the role as requiring a singing actress of extraordinary character and Miricioiu, a prima donna to her fingertips, fits the bill. The voice is technically accomplished, dark-toned and with a dramatic edge. She has a playful quality too, notably in the banqueting scene, where Lady Macbeth feverishly exhorts the guests to raise their glasses."

COG at QUEEN ELLIZABETH HALL LONDON - MACBETH

"Best of all were Nelly Miricioiu, who as Lady Macbeth found dramatic meaning in every note she sang, giving a considerable performance…."

NEW YORK CITY OPERA - AGRIPPINA

"Nelly Miricioiu, a Romanian soprano making her house debut, sang the title role with an appealingly dark tone and imperious manner."

NEW YORK CITY OPERA - AGRIPPINA

"The performance, conducted rather dryly by Ransom Wilson, featured the company debut of the fifty five year old Romanian born, British-based soprano, Nelly Miricioiu, who replaced Ruth Ann Swensen…… Miricioiu isn’t usually associated with the Handel repertory, although she’s a bel canto specialist and Handel’s ornamentations offered her little trouble. Her voice still a dark shaded very expressive soprano…… …………the savage, exploitative Agrippina came over loud and clear."

New York Post  (OCT 16th 2007) : - Clive Barnes

NEW YORK CITY OPERA -AGRIPPINA

"I first heard soprano Miricioiu in her Met debut as Mimi in “La Boheme” in Oct 28 1989….her voice retains its luster, as well as flexibility for the coloratura demanded by the part of Agrippina…. Miricioiu’s pistol-toting Agrippina manipulated son and spouse, pushed Poppea around, figuratively and literally, and delivered a grand “Pensieri voi mi tormenta”, meditating on her efforts on her sons behalf and a joyous “Ogni vento” dancing a little victory dance, as attaining her goal for him seemed within reach."

AMSTERDAM CONCERTGEBOUW –ADRIANA LECOUVREUR Amsterdam  -7th October 2006)

GRAN TEATRE DEL LICEU - TOSCA (Barcelona -12th November 2003)

"The homogenity of the vocal team is generally owed to the great soprano Nelly Miricioiu,  who won the Vinas prize thirty years ago, she is in excellent shape, with a powerful voice enough to dominate the orchestra, a vibrant and harmonious "Vissi d'arte" with a fullness to express the private world of Tosca and the growing intensity of her desperation as an artist in a bad world. She was excellent in the duets with great emotion and solidly well intergrated. "

"Mercadante saved himself for his leading lady, and Emma has some wonderful music from quite another world, a kind of butchy scored Bellini, which Nelly Miricioiu sang with a tremendous palette of colours, a delicate touch with the coloratura, and plenty of old-fashioned intensity as Emma bombed out"

THE TIMES  (OCT 28th 2003): - Robert Thicknesse

OPERA BASTILLE:- (27th Sept 2003)

Opera Bastille (Sept 27th 2003) "There was one sensational and unexpected change of cast. It was announced that Sondra Radvanovsky was unwell and would act Helene while the role was sung from the side by........and the announcer gabbled the name so she could scuttle off before the groans started. But after a confident, fearless account of her first-act aria it did'nt take long to realize that the soprano was none other than our very own Nelly Miricioiu;
it is surely permissible to be possessive about an artist who lives, moves and has her being in the UK. She must know the role, and presumably only needed a score because she did'nt know it in French. Her most beautifully shaped account of 'Ami, le coeur d 'Helene' in the fourth act stopped the show and, visibly moved, she was given a huge, well deserved ovation at the curtain calls. This extraordinary diva can sing anything , and sing it well."

Lucrezia (Nelly Miricioiu)

Lucrezia (Nelly Miricioiu) and Gennaro (Bulent Bezduz)
OPERA INTERNATIONAL(December 2002 issue-Translation)
In a city which is not at its first Lucrecia Borgia, a fact to be underlined (in 1968 with Montserrat Caballe and in 1992 with Christine Weidinger), the cast commands attention for its coherence. Who better than Nelly Miricioiu can today bring back the energy and elegance of language to Donizetti's heroine? Knowing perfectly the secrets of the Italian romantic repertory, the Romanian singer knows how to avoid its traps. With her it is the accuracy of tonality combined with the faultless dramatic temperament which seduces immediately.

LE MONDE DE LA MUSIQUE(December 2002 issue -Translation)
It could not be possible to produce such a piece without a principle performer being able to command the stage. Nelly Miricioiu has a long experience in the romantic bel canto repertoire. She owns the undeniable and infallible style of expressive singing.

OPERA (April 2002 issue)
Nelly Miricioiu and Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia are a potent mix, as was demonstrated at the OPERA DE MARSEILLE (October 8)..........one of the few sopranos today able to inpart dramatic potency to the bel canto idiom.
L‘Opera (April 2003): - Joel Kasow

...Central to the success of this new set is the singing of the fine, characterful soprano Nelly Miricioiu as Elizabeth. With a voice far warmer than Sill's, yet just as flexible in coloratura, she gave a most moving account of the queen.

:Nelly Miricioiu - Bel Canto Portrait (ORR 217)
Nelly Miricioiu ensures that each of the four dramatic scenes shall belong to its own individual character and not just a stereotype. She has become so well versed in the vocal writing of this period that its technical challenges can be met with the assurance of a true prima donna; it is as though she is aware of the inheritance from Pasta and Grisi in the 19th century, with a natural side-glance of acknowledgement to Callas and Caballe in this later age. Parasina's 'Sogno talor' is particularly well phrased, and she attacks Emma's cabaletta with elan and in the authentic grand manner.
